Southern States Particularly Vulnerable
Nationally, one in eight American homeowners don't have meaningful homeowners insurance. West Virginia had the highest share of homeowners without insurance, at 23.4%.
In the South, 15.7% of homeowners either have no insurance at all or pay such low premiums that experts believe their policies offer little to no protection.
States along the Atlantic coast, like Florida and South Carolina, are also among the areas most at risk for severe damage from major hurricanes, as seen by the recent hurricanes Helene and Milton.
This combination of high hurricane risk and inadequate insurance coverage leaves many homeowners in these coastal states facing potential financial ruin in the wake of a major storm.
